The PERFECT Covenant

My covenant I will not break,
Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.
Psalm 89:34
In this scripture we see God confirming the promises he made to David but through this He also reveals a bit of His character. How wonderful to know that our Father will not alter His word or break His covenant.
A covenant is usually between two parties. Both parties agree to be trustworthy in return for trust. The covenant often has a reward as a promise. This reward can be anything from safety to provision or in the case of our Lord, salvation. Lastly a covenant often requires one party to step forward in order for the other party to agree to the covenant.
Marriage between husband and wife perfectly embodies this covenant shown to us in the bible. When we decide to marry our loved one, we step into a covenant by making promises to each. We make these promises with the best of intentions, hoping to have an everlasting covenant.
We have an example of a perfect covenant in Jesus as this is the very reason He came. He stepped up and became a sacrifice for us and we can choose to step into covenant with Him or not. Even though we cannot keep a covenant pure because of our fleshly nature, He made the covenant whole by dying in our place.
How awesome is it to know that the promises we have in the Word will never change. It is the hope we hold onto.
May we strive to become worthy of the covenant we have in Jesus following His example and realising that His grace is sufficient where we come short.
